分馏是分离几种不同沸点的挥发性物质的混合物的一种方法；对某一混合物进行加热，针对混合物中各成分的不同沸点进行冷却分离成相对纯净的单一物质过程。过程中没有新物质生成，只是将原来的物质分离，属于物理变化。分馏实际上是多次蒸馏，它更适合于分离提纯沸点相差不大的液体有机混合物。如煤焦油的分馏；石油的分馏。当物质的沸点十分接近时，约相差20度，则无法使用简单蒸馏法，可改用分馏法。分馏柱的小柱可提供一个大表面积予蒸气凝结。

Fractional distillation is the separation of a mixture into its component parts, or fractions, separating chemical compounds by their boiling point by heating them to a temperature at which one or more fractions of the compound will vaporize. It uses distillation to fractionate. Generally the component parts boil at less than 25 °C from each other under a pressure of one atmosphere. If the difference in boiling points is greater than 25 °C, a simple distillation is used.
