椭圆星系（Elliptical galaxy）是哈伯星系分类中的一种类型，具有下列的物理特征：

椭圆星系的传统形象是最初的爆发之后，恒星形成过程已经结束的星系，只留下衰老中的恒星仍在闪烁着光辉，但偶尔仍会有少量的恒星形成。通常，椭圆星系看起来是黄色或红色，与在旋臂上有高热的年轻恒星，发出淡蓝色调的螺旋星系对比有很大的差异。

椭圆星系的质量和尺度有很大的范围：从几百秒差距到十万秒差距不等，质量从10到接近10太阳质量。最小的矮椭球星系可能不会比典型的球状星团大，但因为拥有相当数量的暗物质，所以不能归类为星团。大部份这些小的椭圆星系都与其它的椭圆星系没有关联性。已知最大的单一星系M87（NGC4486）是椭圆星系。椭圆星系的尺度比任何其他种类的星系都更为宽广。

An elliptical galaxy is a type of galaxy having an approximately ellipsoidal shape and a smooth, nearly featureless brightness profile. Unlike flat spiral galaxies with organization and structure, they are more three-dimensional, without much structure, and their stars are in somewhat random orbits around the center. They are one of the three main classes of galaxy originally described by Edwin Hubble in his 1936 work The Realm of the Nebulae, along with spiral and lenticular galaxies. They range in shape from nearly spherical to highly flat and in size from tens of millions to over one hundred trillion stars. Originally Edwin Hubble hypothesized that elliptical galaxies evolved into spiral galaxies, which was later discovered to be false. Stars found inside of elliptical galaxies are much older than stars found in spiral galaxies.
