学期是学年的一部分。不同的国家有不同的学期制，目前较常见的学期制有两学期制、三学期制及四学期制。

中国的各级学校（包含所有的中小学、高中及多数大学）皆为两学期制，第一学期从九月至隔年一月，第二学期从二月（依照农历新年的日期决定）至六月。

台湾中等学校（包含国中小学、高中职）的学期制为两学期，第一学期从八月30日至隔年一月（或二月初，视春节时间而定），第二学期从二月11日(若遇农历新年则顺延)至六月底，且规定每学期须上满20周。大专院校的学期时间则为，第一学期是从八月初到隔年一月底，第二学期则从二月初到七月底，但实际上课约十八周。第一学期约从九月中才开始上课到隔年一月底，第二学期则从二月中上到六月下旬，途中有的学校有为期约5到10日不等的春假。（每所学校不一定，有的会比中学校提早放，晚开学）
