西番莲科为双子叶植物中的一科。共有18属约530种植物，主要分布在热带地区，尤其以南美洲最多。中国有2属约18种，主要分布在南方。

最普遍常见的是作为观赏花卉的西番莲花（Passiflora caerulea或Passiflora coccinea）和作为水果的可食用的西番莲果（Passiflora edulis）。

1981年的克朗奎斯特分类法将本科分在堇菜目下，1998年根据基因亲缘关系分类的APG 分类法将其列在新设立的金虎尾目下，2003年经过修订的APG II 分类法认为可以选择性地与王冠草科和时钟花科合并。

Passifloraceae is a family of flowering plants, containing about 750 species classified in around 27 genera.

They include trees, shrubs, lianas and climbing plants, and are mostly found in tropical regions. The family takes its name from the passion flower genus (Passiflora) which includes the edible passion fruit (Passiflora e****s) as well as garden plants such as Maypop and Running Pop.
