宠物，是为了玩赏、伴侣，而饲养的动物。一般是指人为了消除孤寂或娱乐，其中猫、狗、鸟和鱼最为常见。大多数宠物在主人那里会受到很好的对待，也不将之作为食用。但有时也衍生虐待动物问题。由于人们对宠物的需求很大，导致市场的出现，但许多动物从野生到达市场如鸟类贸易市场之前，会导致不必要的死亡。
宠物一般是哺乳纲或鸟纲的动物，因为这些动物大脑比较发达，有的大脑能相当于3至5岁左右的幼儿的大脑，所以容易和人交流。但其实人可以把所有种类的动物变成宠物，甚至是有些大型野生生物。或是包括鱼纲、爬行纲、两栖纲甚至昆虫等，这一类别都是以体态和栖息地仿真作为其乐趣，不过一般宠物都是体型比较小、温和亲人的动物。宠物的内容也随人们的认知的生态的变迁而变化，以前许多作为宠物饲养的动物，由于贸易需求而导致物种本身的濒危，这些动物已经不再适合作为宠物。适合做宠物的物种往往是人工繁殖成熟，容易控制活动范围，不会对野生种群造成威胁的种类。
