Piping shrike

The piping shrike is the emblematic bird that appears on South Australia's flag, State Badge and Coat of Arms. The bird appears "displayed proper" with its wings outstretched and curved upwards. Although the image of the piping shrike is readily identified with South Australia, the bird in its own right has never been formally adopted as a faunal or bird emblem of the state. The term Piping Shrike for this species of Australian Magpie is a common mistake and its correct name is Magpie-lark (Grallina cyanoleuca). Unfortunately this species is now more commonly known by its incorrect name than its actual name of Magpie lark. Though the term Magpie Lark is also quite misleading as the species is neither a Magpie or Lark. It may also be known as the Mud Lark in Victoria, the Pee Wee in NSW and again in South Australia Murray Magpie.
