悲伤是种情绪反应，多数高等哺乳动物均有此反应，其中，人类对此反应最为显著。

人类的悲伤通常来自经历上的挫折失败，如：无法抗拒的住所改变，亲友死亡、离婚、毕业或失业。另外，这类生物反应又会因生活经验与文化特质而异。举例来说，失去亲人往往让人觉得悲伤，但悲伤的表达方式则因当事者年龄，经历而有所不同。

悲伤表现在外即为沮丧心情。通常悲伤也会伴与落泪与沉默。若悲伤情况持续一段时间，即为一般来说的忧郁，甚至临床病症上的忧郁症。引起悲伤的因素既然来自环境，心理因素或生理因素，也因此，在悲伤之余，能够让当事者纾解心情以重新适应新环境或身体变化，这也是悲伤的最大好处之一。

Sadness is emotional pain associated with, or characterized by feelings of disadvantage, loss, despair, grief, helplessness, disappointment and sorrow. An individual experiencing sadness may become quiet or lethargic, and withdraw themselves from others. An example of severe sadness is depression. Crying is often an indication of sadness.
