These examples show us that just as the various Romance language descended from Latin, English, Swedish, German, and many other languages, descended from own common ancestor known as Proto-Germanic spoken around 500BCE.

The Germanic, or Proto-Germanic, language group can be traced back to the region between the Elbe river in modern Germany and southern Sweden some 3,000 years ago.

We can use the same process to go back one step further and trace the origins of Proto-Germanic to a language called Proto-Indo-European spoken about 6000 years ago on the pontic steppe in modern day Ukraine and Russia.

Proto-Germanic (PGmc; German Urgermanisch; also called Common Germanic, German Gemeingermanisch) is the reconstructed proto-language of the Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages.

Proto-Germanic developed into three branches during the first half of the first millennium of the Common Era: West Germanic, East Germanic and North Germanic, which however remained in contact over a considerable time, especially the Ingvaeonic languages (including English), which arose from West Germanic dialects which remained in continued contact with North Germanic.
