轮机工程是一门管理并维护船舶动力机械与电机系统海事专业技术工程。是最早受国际公约规范的专门职业技术。

主机为主要船舶推进发动机，小有一般交通客船与私人游艇、乃至大型货柜轮、散装轮以及油轮等大型商用船舶的动力。依编制由大管轮负责引擎管理与维修保养。

辅机系统主要运作于链接主机整体运作系统、以及船员、旅客生活系统。

等机械

船舶之甲板机械一般会列入轮机部来管理与维修保养，并由甲板部（水手）操作。甲板机械一般用以辅助船舶进出港作业。

目前主流的推进设备以螺旋伡叶为主，尚还区分为（固定伡叶或可变螺矩伡叶）、喷射冲压式、吊舱伡叶式等等。 辅助推进器大多是称呼船首的舷侧堆进器，靠离岸时常使用到。
