《卫报》(文章版)

What classical literature there was — for example, just seven out of over 120 plays by Sophocles — had survived because medieval monks had thought it worth preserving, copying it over and over again down the generations.

古代文学的作品,比如索福克勒斯的 120 多部剧作中仅剩下七部,之所以幸存下来,是因为中世纪的修道士认为它们值得保存,代代相传进行了反复抄写。

人物档案

We might, however, speculate that the foremost  influence on him throughout his education were the great Greek playwrights, Aeschylus, Sophocles,   Aristophanes and Euripides and the Roman comic and tragic playwrights Plautus, Terence and Seneca.

Sophocles (/ˈsɒfəklz/; Greek: Σοφοκλῆς, Sophoklēs, Ancient Greek: [so.pʰo.klɛ̂ːs]; c. 497/6 – winter 406/5 BC) is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived. His first plays were written later than those of Aeschylus, and earlier than or contemporary with those of Euripides. Sophocles wrote 120 plays during the course of his life, but only seven have survived in a complete form: Ajax, Antigone, The Women of Trachis, Oedipus the King, Electra, Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus. For almost 50 years, Sophocles was the most-fêted playwright in the dramatic competitions of the city-state of Athens that took place during the religious festivals of the Lenaea and the Dionysia. He competed in 30 competitions, won 18, and was never judged lower than second place. Aeschylus won 14 competitions, and was sometimes defeated by Sophocles, while Euripides won 5 competitions.
