系统还原内置在微软的Windows Me、Windows XP、Windows Vista以及Windows 7操作系统，可以还原系统文件，注册表，已安装程序等，当电脑发生问题时，用户便可使用此功能尝试还原到到系统先前状态。系统还原一个是个人电脑的特殊及系统的备份工具。

Windows 2000以及Windows Server 2003操作系统并无内置系统还原。订制于Windows XP的系统还原可安装在Windows Server 2003，但是并不会受到微软的支持。

在Windows Vista中，系统还原拥有一个改良的界面，并基于磁盘区阴影复制服务技术。在之前的Windows版本，系统还原是基于一个文件过滤器监察某些扩展名，并在复写之前先复制文件。

System Restore is a feature in Microsoft Windows that allows the user to revert their computer's state (including system files, installed applications, Windows Registry, and system settings) to that of a previous point in time, which can be used to recover from system malfunctions or other problems. First included in Windows ME, it has since been included in all following desktop versions of Windows released since, excluding the Windows Server. In Windows 10, System Restore is turned off by default and must be enabled by users in order to function.
