北回归线

Carretera 83 (Vía Corta) Zaragoza-Victoria, Km 27+800 (Tamaulipas, México). De todos los cruces del trópico de Cáncer con las carreteras federales mexicanas, éste es el único lugar donde la latitud está marcada con absoluta precisión y además se puede visualizar el desplazamiento anual entre los años 2005 y 2010.

北回归线是太阳在北半球能够垂直射到的离赤道最远的位置点，将这些点连起来的假想线便叫“北回归线”，以西元2014年夏至日为准，其位置约在北纬23度26分14.675秒。相对的，南纬23度26分14.675秒则为“南回归线”。

因为地球会进行自转，所以会产生昼夜更替的现象，但地球的自转轴其实并不是正的，而是与绕太阳公转的轨道面（黄道面）呈约66.55°的夹角，称「黄赤交角」。由于「黄赤交角」的存在，太阳在地球表面的直射点并非一直正对着赤道带，而是在北回归线和南回归线的区间之内移动，每年春分日（3月21日左右）太阳直射点位于位于赤道，此后北移，于夏至日（6月22日左右）到达约北纬23°26′，然后转而南移，于秋分日（9月23日左右）回到赤道，并继续南移，于冬至日（12月22日左右）到达南纬23°26′，然后立即再度向北移动，于次年春分日再度回归赤道。所以太阳直射点看起来就像是在到达北回归线和南回归线之后，立即掉头往赤道的位置回返。
