立方质数是由特殊的方程生成的质数。这种方程共有两组，都包含有变量x和y的立方项。A.J.C.坎宁安（A. J. C. Cunningham）首先研究了这种方程。

第一种生成立方质数的方程：

由上式产生的首几个质数是： 7, 19, 37, 61, 127... (OEIS:A002407)

上式可以重写成，再简化成，这正和中心六边形数的一般形式一模一样。即是说这类立方质数都是中心六边形数。

坎宁安的《对准梅森数的研究》（On quasi-Mersennian numbers''）曾对它们做过研究。

第二种生成立方质数的方程：
