松尾芭蕉 （生于宽永21年（1644年），卒于元禄7年10月12日（1694年11月28日）），是日本江户时代前期的一位俳谐师的署名。他公认的功绩是把俳句形式推向顶峰，但是在他生活的时代，芭蕉以作为俳谐连歌（由一组诗人创作的半喜剧链接诗）诗人而着称，被誉为日本“俳圣”。

松尾芭蕉在年轻时就开始写诗，在进入江户后很快的成为全日本的知名人物。他曾以教书维生，但后来丢弃了在文学圈中的社交及都会生活，开始在日本各地漫游，为了获得灵感，甚至曾前往北方的荒野。他的作品也受到他第一手的生活经验所影响，多半借由一些简单的事物来表达其感受。

Matsuo Bashō(松尾 芭蕉, 1644 – 1694), born 松尾 金作, then Matsuo Chūemon Munefusa(松尾 忠右卫门 宗房), was the most famous poet of the Edo period in Japan. During his lifetime, Bashō was recognized for his works in the collaborative haikai no renga form; today, after centuries of commentary, he is recognized as the greatest master of haiku (then called hokku). Matsuo Bashō's poetry is internationally renowned; and, in Japan, many of his poems are reproduced on monuments and traditional sites. Although Bashō is justifiably famous in the West for his hokku, he himself believed his best work lay in leading and participating in renku. He is quoted as saying, “Many of my followers can write hokku as well as I can. Where I show who I really am is in linking haikai verses.”
