芥川奖，正式名称为芥川龙之介奖，乃是纪念日本大正时代的文豪芥川龙之介（1892-1927）所设立的文学奖，并由主办单位文艺春秋颁发给「雅文学（纯文学）」新人作家的一个奖项；现今的主办单位已改为日本文学振兴会。

1935年（昭和10年）由菊池宽在《文艺春秋》4月号（追悼直木三十五号）的连载专栏「话之纸屑桶」中提出以当年2月去世的直木三十五、1927年去世的芥川龙之介的名称来创立新人奖的构想。从此以后，每年举行两次的选拔活动。上半年度（12月1日～5月31日之前公开发表的作品）是在7月中旬进行选拔、8月中旬颁奖，刊载于《文艺春秋》9月号。下半年度（6月1日～11月30日之前公开发表的作品）是在翌年1月中旬进行选拔、同年2月中旬颁奖，在《文艺春秋》3月号刊载。该奖项在二次大战时1945年一度中断过，后来在1949年重新开始进行选拔活动。

The Akutagawa Prize(芥川龙之介赏,Akutagawa Ryūnosuke Shō) is a Japanese literary award presented semi-annually. It was established in 1935 by Kan Kikuchi, then-editor of Bungeishunjū magazine, in memory of author Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. It is currently sponsored by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Literature, and is awarded in January ('E' in the list, below) and July ('L' in the list below) to the best serious literary story published in a newspaper or magazine by a new or rising author.
